We will embark on a day trip to the stunning area labeled “Switzerland of Latvia” after a warm meet & greet by your private guide. Delightfully nicknamed for its striking landscape, Gauja National Park boasts an ancient riverbank and sandstone caves with spectacular views as far as the eye can tell.
Our visit to the 14th century Sigulda Castle takes us back to a legendary era of the Livonian Order and to the daily discipline of the local garrison. You will be guided through a line of medieval fortification elements to the foundations of the historic courtyard, where we are able to climb the once outstanding stone walls of the castle.
We will also pay a visit to the Turaida castle across the valley, meaning ‘God’s Garden’ in ancient Livonian. The red-brick castle with its tall cylindrical tower was built in 1214 on the site of a Liv stronghold.
From the wooden North tower we will spot the soft lines of the Gauja riverbed down below and the striking reddish colored Turaida Castle, located just a cannon trough away in the woods over the river.
Leaving the inviting quarters of the Sigulda castle hill behind, we will now cross the river valley with a bird’s-eye view. Down below, we will discover the magical walls of the Gutman´s Cave. The heartbreaking legend of a young lady named Turaida Rose was born here in one of the largest natural caves of the Baltics and keeps alive the popular belief of the healing powers of the spring underneath.
Once on the south side of the river, we will treat ourselves to a satisfying lunch at a local restaurant before heading back towards the capital city.
The late afternoon in Riga is spent on a panoramic tour along the lovely riverbank of Daugava. The highlights of our route include the historic Riga Castle, Freedom Monument and the National Opera. We will also not miss a photo stop at the House of Blackheads on the outskirts of the historic old town.
Thereafter our day spent in the splendid nature and charming atmosphere of Gauja National Park comes to an end in Riga harbor or at your hotel.
