The city of Riga superbly showcases it´s medieval treasures, modern lifestyle and love for it´s Baltic heritage while keeping it´s historic integrity.
We will start by exploring the largest city in the Baltics by an enjoyable sightseeing drive through the city center attractions. Though first built in the 13th century by German crusaders on their journey to the north, the charming medieval old town today is surrounded by structures mostly from the 19th century giving the overall style a hint of Western European atmosphere.
We will admire the scenic Daugava riverbank from a viewpoint across the water and see also the medieval Riga Castle building.
The splendid style of Art Nouveau architecture is found all the way from the city center to the celebrated quarter itself. Recognized as one of the finest collections of Art Nouveau style in Europe, the captivating and enchanting details of hundreds of facades are utterly fascinating. We will stop for photos and enjoy a guided walk to the highlights of this mesmerizing quarter in Riga.
One of the Latvian symbols, the delicate elements of three stars on top of the Freedom Monument depict the sovereignty of the three larger regions in Latvia. We will also see the verdant beauty of the Riga Opera House park next door.
We will next take a guided tour around the maze of Riga old town. The urban spirit of the town center reflects it´s prosperity already from the 13th century and is proudly presenting the same today. Riga Cathedral and House of Three Brothers are undoubtedly pearls of the era. Wonderfully entertaining legends and stories of the time allow us to take a closer look into a Hanseatic citizens lifestyle and habits. Time will be allocated to enjoy also a break for a coffee or some local souvenir shopping.
The Central Market is the brightest and most diverse food-stuff market place in Latvia. We will get close to the local culture and traditions by getting to know the typical and unique products here – from old to new flavors of Latvia. Your local guide will lead you through Europe’s largest indoor market and bazaar. Aside from being one of the most notable structures from 20th century in Latvia, it has been also included in UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Their historic value lies in the structures of the market, which are five pavilions constructed by reusing old German Zeppelin hangars incorporating Neoclassicism and Art Deco styles in a very practical manner.
Riga has always had a role in development of trade, science and education of the region and by understanding the past, we become closer to appreciating the modern city of Riga after a few hours on a private guided tour.
