Our seaside stroll will now show us past the harbor and charming neighborhood cafés to the legendary Patarei Prison, a former Peter the Great sea-fortress. We will step off the path by the region’s largest sea center at the Seaplane Harbor Museum, located next door.
The concrete dome hangars, housing the recently opened naval museum, are architecturally unique in the whole world. This is an extraordinary experience for the whole family, combining an interactive exhibition of the past with hard-to-resist modern features both on land and sea. Aquarium and games indoors leave little time for boredom. Even the not so inclined for maritime history will change their mind after stepping off legendary submarine Lembitu, which made its maiden voyage almost 75 years ago.
After the Seaplane Harbor Museum visit, we will relish the serenity of Kalamaja Park. The 500-year-old location of a cemetery for Swedish soldiers closed in 1950.
You may be surprised, that the early 20th century workers residential area has not lost its industrial character. The spirit of those times is kept alive by a building on the east side of the park, the Estonia Piano Factory, well-known for producing some of the world’s best grand pianos.
We will continue the tour in the old Telliskivi factory area, a present day Mecca of alternative designer´s shops and lovely cafés, where local food is honored and being different is a standard.
A delicious coffee break in a distinctively bohemian setting is the ideal way to stretch your legs and end the tour. Charming local design & handicraft boutiques are there to offer you the most thrilling shopping opportunity off the beaten path. Everything you leave with, is unique and one-of-a-kind!
Kalamaja is definitely the place to go, if you cannot resist an insightful glimpse into an area, which has turned a rough past and a promising future to a perfect blend of unquestionable charm.
