The Nordic cross has for long been known by the Estonians. The strong ties and not so amicable battles between the Estonian Vikings and Scandinavian tribes date back to the 13th century. After all, the Estonian sailing vessels were called pirate ships by the Nordic clans for a reason.

Our day starts with a comprehensive walking tour in the heart of a Viking built city. During the Tallinn Old Town stroll you will learn of the fascinating stories of inhabitants of this Hanseatic pearl.

A visit to the upper town reveals legends and true stories of past powers and rules of the country. The uniquely located Toompea Hill hides stunning views over the lower town and boasts of both savage Viking as well as noble past. Today, center of national government and home to Prime Ministers Offices and Chancellery of Chancellor of Justice.

Thereafter, we will leave the city behind and arrive a short countryside drive to the Viking Village. Explore the mysterious Viking lifestyle by learning how to throw an axe and enjoy a trebuchet experience in an authentic Viking era fortress or hone your archery skills instead.

The playground at the Viking Village is also entirely unique. It is equipped with wonderful forts, a stone-lifting mechanism, a Viking ship on ‘stormy seas’, a witch’s hut, a log lifter, sandbox, swings and a number of other attractions for children to play and climb around on.

To end our tour at the Viking village, we will enjoy a delicious local dish of pork, sauerkraut and herb potatoes, fit for a wild Viking. The old Estonians use to say, that beauty does not fill the tummy, but a good meal will.

Once back in Tallinn, we will tour the medieval heart of historic lower old town. This was a celebrated center of medieval trade.

The charming lower town greets us with a unique atmosphere on the Town Hall Square. Crowning over the location of a medieval market place is the impressive Town Hall building itself. These days, no longer the seat of municipality, the charming venue boasts inviting outdoor cafés and hosts seasonal festivals & fairs instead.

There nothing more satisfying than being given the opportunity to be a part of the olden times yourself.

Tour ends with a drive back to the cruise port or your hotel.

Tallinn Private Old Town Walking Tour & Viking Village Adventure

We had such a wonderful time. Despite being very busy that day, Nordic Experience found a way to give our family a private tour we’ll never forget. Our tour guide, Erik, was a wealth of knowledge. He told us history not only of Estonia but of the whole region while walking us around Talinn. He was kind and patient with our children and very accommodating for Grandma who has some mobility issues. After the walking tour, he took us to the Viking Village where we had an outstanding meal and then a ton of fun throwing axes, shooting bows and arrows, and flinging a trebuchet. The kids had a blast while we all actually learned lots of history. Wonderful!

We are a family of 9 (age range 75 to 9 years old) and were on a Baltic cruise and spent the day with Eva-Maria in Tallinn on a private tour. She was an awesome guide. Her enthusiasm for her city is infectious. She turned what we thought to be a throw-away port of call to one of the funner stops on our cruise. She was easy to work with and highly responsive prior to docking in Tallinn so arranging the excursion was a breeze….don’t let the cruise line lock you into their terrible excursions with WAY too many people on the excursion! Get personalized service from companies like Eva-Maria’s! She arranged a very nice bus for all of us so it was super comfortable. We have a child in a fold up wheelchair and she accommodated us perfectly. Mobility is a slight challenge in the old town (as in a lot of old European cities with a lot of cobblestone streets) but it was quite manageable for us.
We spent the day touring the old town, both upper and lower and then went to the Viking Village. This tour struck a good balance between the adults and the kids. The older folks appreciated the history and architecture of the old city and the kids had fun at the Viking Village, throwing axes and launching the catapult. The food served at the Viking Village was actually really good and the atmosphere of an old style Viking lodge was really fun.
We liked Eva-Maria so much, we decided to use her company to arrange excursions in Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen and they were all excellent (I will add reviews in those cities).
I would highly recommend this company to arrange your excursions!
